A sports business writer from Charlotte, North Carolina...

Andrew Westney

I'm Andrew Westney--Andrew Westney--I know my own name--uh, I'm from Charlotte, North Carolina. Uh, I was the 1991 Teen Tournament champ, and I believe I'm the only, uh, Teen Tournament survivor to--to be back on this, uh, the Battle of the Decades.

What was it like when you first went on the show?
Back then, y'know, I thought Jeopardy! had been on forever. And, of course, it was still pretty early on in the--in the show, but, you know, I had watched it since I was--I was little, so, it, uh, it was definitely a dream.

Do you have any other memories of being on the show?
I remember being--loving being on the show, and I--I remember that--because it was a two-day thing--I had--it looked like I was losing on the second day, but I ended up--because I had enough combined to win, so I think everybody in the--the audience was shocked, so that was a pretty cool moment. And also, I remember, we were very good about not letting anybody know the results of the competition, so when we got home, every show, we would have, like a--a viewing party, and it got bigger and bigger.

What is your reaction to watching yourself win the Teen Tournament?
"What is wrong?" That's the moment right there. Wow. And, they're like, "He just made 7,900 bucks, he has no chance," so yeah, I--I'm--I'm looking up at the scoreboard, thinking, "I think I calculated this thing right. If I screwed up the math I'm going to be really, really upset with myself." [Chuckles] By a hundred. Cut it awfully close!

Congratulations on winning the fan poll to earn a spot in the Battle of the Decades!
Thank you so much. I mean, I--you know--it's--it's crazy to think [I won the fan poll]--because you--you know the people that you're e-mailing, or whatever [will vote for you], but, you know, it's probably a drop in the bucket compared to all the people watching it online, and, and, and, y'know. Um, and it's just cool think that, like, somebody saw it, or they hopefully thought it was funny, and thought it was cool, and saw my wife and enjoyed our, uh, our little, uh, our little duo. So, uh, it's neat. And--and, uh, thank you very much. It's great.

"He was a high-school student from Atlanta when he won the Teen Tournament in 1991. Now he's a sports business writer living in Charlotte, North Carolina. Your votes named him the fan favorite contestant for this decade. So please give a warm welcome to..."
