A U.S. Secretary of Education from Washington, D.C....

Hon. Margaret Spellings

On January 20, 2005, the United States Senate confirmed Margaret Spellings as the 8th U.S. Secretary of Education. During President George W. Bush's first term, she served as Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, where she helped craft education policies, including the No Child Left Behind Act.

Previously, Ms. Spellings worked for six years for then-Governor Bush as a Senior Advisor. Her work included the Texas Reading Initiative, the Student Success Initiative to eliminate social promotion, and the nation's strongest school assessment and accountability system. With two daughters, she is the first mother of school children to serve as U.S. Secretary of Education. She is a graduate of the University of Houston with a bachelor's degree in political science. Jeopardy! has designated ProLiteracy Worldwide to receive Secretary Spellings' winnings.

Why do you think you will win today?
Well, I'm gon--y'know, I don't know. These are pretty smart people, and one's a pro. Michael McKean has been here twice before. And Hill Harper is a law--a Harvard lawyer, a magna cum laude from Brown, so it's pretty stiff competition, but I'm hoping for the best.
