A high school AP English teacher from Montgomery, Alabama...

Kate Wilson

Students: Good luck Ms. Wilson!

Why is it special for you to be on Jeopardy!?
I've been doing Scholars Bowl for years, since I was in junior high myself, and it is such an incredible, uh, opportunity to be on Jeopardy! and to show my kids that I now coach on their Scholars Bowl team that you can go a long way just--just by what you know.

How did you prepare to be on Jeopardy!?
Uh, I've prepared for the tournament just by practicing and coaching my own high school Scholars Bowl team.

What are your dream categories?
Oh, I'd love to see stuff about the French Revolution or, um, artists and--and art.

How has your school reacted to you being on Jeopardy!?
Oh, my--my faculty, my, um, principal, my students--they've all been cheering me on ever since I found out I was going to be on, and I just--I can't thank them enough for all of their support.

...

How does it feel to be a finalist in the Jeopardy! Teachers Tournament?
Um, elated. I'm really excited. I can't--I can't believe I made it this far.

If you win the $100,000 prize, what will you do with your winnings?
[Laughs] Um, it's--it's--uh, some--some basic things. Uh, a new roof for the house would be nice. [Laughs] And, y'know, some--maybe some new furniture. But I also want maybe to, um, to kind of splurge on some things I've never had that--that I've wanted, like a telecope. Things like--that--like that.

What will your students say about your success on Jeopardy!?
Oh, they're just going to be thrilled. We're going to do a whole, uh, school-wide watching party for the, um, for the first match. And, of course, I can't tell them that I--I've gone this far. So I'm hoping the principal will let them keep watching. 'Cause it comes on, uh, actually in the morning in our--in our town, so...

What was the thing hat surprised you most about being a contestant?
Uh, was there anything unexpected? The samurai category was very unexpected, and I didn't realize that I knew enough in that category to do well.

Do you have any special messages for those back home who are cheering you on?
Yeah, I'd like to say thank you to my friends, my family, um, my school, my class, my principal, and especially my Scholar's Bowl coach from when I was in high school, who is subbing for me this week, Lynn Hewitt.
