Students: "Good luck Mr. Temple!"
I'm Charles Temple, I'm a high school English teacher from Ocracoke, North Carolina.
What made you choose teaching as a career?
Uh--I--I loved the teachers I had when I was growin' up. I love talkin' to people about books, and when they said they'd pay me for it, all the better.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
I love the relationships you form with the kids. I teach--I'm the only high school English teacher in my school, so I teach all--the same kids for four years. Uh, so we get to know each other very well.
How did your students react when they found out you made it on Jeopardy!?
Uh, my students started firing questions at me and deciding how to spend the money.
Any plans for your winnings?
I think I'll probably travel some. Uh, and real estate and student loans may come in to it as well.
Tune in! You might learn a thing or two!

How does it feel to win the Jeopardy! Teachers Tournament?
It's phenomenal. It--it's not sinkin' in yet. Uh, I, uh, I was just playing, y'know? I-I wasn't really thinkin' about winning. I was just trying to manage the game and--and, uh, play smart and not make too many stupid mistakes. Uh, I, y'know, everybody who got this far had a couple of bullets that they dodged, and I certainly had my share, and, uh, and--it's phenomenal.
What did you think of the "CURRENT MUSIC" category?
Oh, my God! I got the Lady Gaga, which, uh, I meant to thank my Professor David Huddle. He's a big fan of Lady--of Lady Gaga. And, uh, I meant to throw his name when I was talkin', and, uh... oh! I should've gotten the MUSE category. Joe Chestnut will be upset about that. Um, the rest, what're you gonna do? I wasn't gonna get the Linkin Park one. Uh, uh, I think that's all right with me.
What's the most valuable lesson you learned from this experience?
Uh, the most valuable lesson, I guess, was to try and remember everything. Uh, stay calm, and, uh, y'know, don't get frustrated. Uh, my first game, uh, the first Jeopardy! Round was not really goin' my way. I was havin' trouble with the buzzer and I got the--got the timing down, and--and, uh, things turned my way from that point on.
Any plans for your winnings?
Maybe travel. Uh, student loans are paid off, uh, so that's nice. Um, I'll probably travel, but not for a while, I've got plans this summer, so uh, I'll probably try and make it--I don't know, try not to spend it on dumb stuff for a while until I can do something spectacular with it.
Congratulations on winning the first-ever Jeopardy! Teachers Tournament! |
