Fred Cofone

Hey, New York, I'm Fred Cofone from Old Greenwich, Connecticut. Watch me bring home some new money, on Jeopardy!

[2011-02-02 Winner's Circle interview]
How does it feel to be the new Jeopardy! champion?
To be a Jeopardy! champion, it's just--it's fantastic. Right now, I don't think it's quite set in, but it's something that I've been thinking about for a real long time, and to finally have this opportunity is--it's great.

Did you guess during Final Jeopardy!?
I just, uh, looked at the numbers on the board. I kind of tried to get an idea of how I thought, uh, my opponents would wager based on the category and what I needed to do. I wanted keep myself alive, so I took that in con--into consideration, and, uh, that was a key for me, obviously.

Any messages to the folks back home?
I really appreciate, uh, my mom and dad. My mom has been urging me to do this for a long time. My dad drove me to the airport before I came out here, so it would be tough to be here without him, too. And then, uh, I thank also my wife Amy and my little girl Lucia who have helped me practice these last few weeks here, and gotten me ready, so, uh, I'm really proud to be here, and I hope they're proud of me.

How does it feel to win your second game?
The feeling as a two-time Jeopardy! champion is just fantastic. This is, uh--I obviously was a little more successful this time around than my first game, and, uh, it's tremendous. I'm having a great time right now.

How did you feel about your competition today?
Mai, uh, played great. She, uh, she came on like a storm. And, uh, I was a little hesitant on the buzzer. I didn't want to give away the, uh, the (at least) tie that I had, so I was being very careful there. I got a couple key questions late, and, uh, that carried me through, and then I wagered smartly in Final Jeopardy! to make sure I was coming back in one way or another.

Do you have any advice for future Jeopardy! contestants?
Oh, just, uh--this has been a great time, and I again thank my parents, and, uh, they stressed education all through the time--to my sisters and I--that we were growing up, and, uh, just read as much as you possibly can if you're interested in comin' on the show, and just pay attention to everything you can, and, uh, you'll be successful.

Season 27 2-time champion: $24,400 + $2,000.
